5Dark Rethoric
Motte-and-Bailey
Description
Here one shelters behind two castles: a bold claim for conquest, a modest claim for retreat. Under challenge, the speaker flees to safety; once danger passes, he returns to the stronger boast.
Why This Works
It works because audiences seldom track claim boundaries. Retreat is mistaken for clarification, and the original excess survives.
Example 1
“This method guarantees success.” Challenged, they say, “I only meant it can help.” Later, guarantee returns.
Example 2
“All criticism is malicious.” Pressed for proof, they retreat to “some criticism is uninformed,” then resume the original attack.
